The use of silver as a medicine was widespread until World War II when antibiotics became the standard treatment for infections.
NASA chose silver to purify the astronauts' water and most airlines use silver air and water purifiers. Silver salts are used to treat burn victims so that infection can be avoided. In fact, silver is used in all major burn centers throughout the United States. Some cosmetic companies are using silver as a preservative in products because of its non-toxicity.
